The Summer Months are with us, hope you can cope with the expected heat or maybe the rain!

Last Sunday, we welcomed back to St Mary’s Church, our old friend, the Revd Les Oglesby who has previously stood in for our regular Rector when he is not available. The Revd Les has been retired for sometime now but still leads a very good Holy Communion service when asked. This Sunday was a Choral Communion service which means we sing the Communion setting instead of just reading it as we do for a normal service. Revd Les is still a good singer, I first met him when he sat next to me as a member of St Mary’s Singers, a Potton choral society from a few years ago. Revd Les also sang bass as I do now in St Mary’s church choir and he led the Communion setting with ease. This particular setting was written by our late choirmaster David J Barker, who sadly passed away some years ago. This was written by David and his wife Judith who was our church organist at that time, but also passed away within months of husband David. Their Communion setting is now sung once a month for our Choral Communion service, and it is a pleasure for us to sing this wonderful setting and remember the lovely couple who wrote it for us.

The church this Sunday was quite low in attendance probably due to the holiday season and the hot weather generally. We hope that doesn’t carry on for next Sunday’s service which is our ever popular “Friends and Family” service and this time the theme is the “Parable of the Lost Sheep”. The service of course is designed for all ages with the children making craft items which represent the theme for the service. Now we are just wondering if the star pet sheep that is always on the Revd Alex Wheatley’s mind and known as Baaaartholemnew, is to be the star of this particular service? Maybe he has wandered off again! We will find out next Sunday so we hope to see many youngsters in for the service, along with their mums and dads, grandparents and anyone else they are able to bring! As usual, it should be fun!
