The Sunday Services at St Mary's in the coming months

The service last Sunday Morning was the shorter Holy Communion led by a visiting Retired Priest, the Rev Margaret Marshall from St Neots. As there were no children present for this service, being the start of the school holidays, the treasure Boxes were not used. The Rev Margaret was not familiar with that type of service so not having to wonder about the “Treasures” in the box probably came as some relief. However, as she will be leading this monthly service for the foreseeable future, she will probably become quite used to the boxes very quickly! St Mary’s will mainly be seeing a team of retired Priests over the coming months until a new incumbent is appointed. The retired priests will get

Gill's Farewell Buffet and Barbecue Lunch

After the morning service, there followed a Buffet and Barbeque held at the Scouts Hall, where about 200 people came along to eat, drink and chat sociably with Gill and Bob and to say their personal thanks and farewells. We were entertained by a lovely choir from Potton Lower School.

The Rev Gill's Farewell Service with Bishop Richard of Bedford

The Sunday Morning service was introduced by Bishop Richard of Bedford with the words “This is a Bitter Sweet occasion”. The Bishop was of course telling everyone that this was to be the farewell service to the Rev Gill Smith as she and husband Bob, retire and move away from Potton to their chosen retirement home in rural Norfolk. Bishop Richard recalled all the sweet times from the last eleven years, that Gill has been our Rector and that her service to Potton and the other two Parishes, Sutton and Cockayne Hatley, had been a caring, loving and dedicated time for her Parishioners, always going the extra mile when the need arose. He recalled the many times he had been involved with events in

Final Friends and Family Service for the Rev Gill

This morning, July 7th 2019, the Rev Gill Smith gave her final Friends and Family service before she leaves us on retirement. The theme today was "Go on your way", a theme chosen to help Gill and husband Bob, a safe and happy journey into their new life in Norfolk. Many people came this morning to help prepare them for that journey and all the activities were chosen to show that we will not forget them. The pictures that follow will illustrate this mornings activities but included are a few of Gill with our new door and window in our refurbished North Porch, a long needed improvement and one that Gill helped to implement. The work is not quite finished but it should be completed in the next

The New North Door

The new door and porch window have now been fitted, just a bit of tweaking to do to finish it off, but we think everyone will give the project their full approval

Rev Gill Smith - Final "Thought for the Day" on BigglesFM

For those who don't see the Biggleswade Chronicle, I sent them this article based on Gill's interview with BigglesFM Station Owner Alan Waring last Friday. The article was printed in full and with the photograph taken during one of her earlier broadcasts. It was a great interview and although I haven't got a transcript. my article is taken from my notes I took. Here it is: The Rev Gill Smith says farewell On Friday June 29th, the Rev Gill Smith, Rector of Potton, Sutton and Cockayne Hatley Parishes, gave her final farewell to all her listeners to her “Thought for the Day” broadcast by BigglesFM. Gill has given these talks nearly every month since she has been in her post, which she came int
