This week in our Church

The Rev Canon Lyndsay Dew the former Rural Dean for the Biggleswade district, officiated at last Sunday morning’s service of Holy Communion. In his sermon, the Rev Canon Lyndsay spoke of the eve of the new church year and “Stir Up Sunday” which is the last Sunday before Advent and because the dating of Advent varies a little from year to year, it can fall anytime between November 20th and 26th. This year it was on Sunday November 24th, therefore Advent starts next Sunday, so last Sunday was said to be the Eve of the Church New Year. It was traditionally the day for stirring up the Christmas Pudding, when friends and family would gather to help stir the new pudding. Next Sunday the morning se

A Musical, Singalong Evening with the "2Gs"

Last Friday evening, the "2Gs", Geoff and Graham, both keyboard players from the Church Music group, put on a great evening with audience participation, playing songs old and new, but all well known, with the audience singing along, or at least trying to! It was great fun and the audience of about 25 people had real fun trying to fit the words they thought they knew, in with the notes played by G&G, and mostly these notes were in the right order which kind of helped! Everyone seemed to enjoy singing like this and I'm sure it will be done again sometime on the future, so watch these pages. Towards the end of the evening, Roy our Church Organist, joined them to entertain us with some Flute pla

This week in the Benefice

The weekend at St Mary’s started off with an evening of “Singalong” with the “2Gs” Geoff and Graham from our Church Music Group. They played a good selection of popular music from years gone by and the audience joined in the singing with quite hilarious results. This was a great evening of fun and we have no doubt it will happen again! On Sunday morning, a service of Holy Communion was conducted by a visiting priest, the Rev Dr Ray Porter, at 9am. This was the only service at the church as the main service of the day was a Service of Remembrance, with St Mary’s joining Potton’s other churches to remember those lost in two World Wars. The service started on the Market Square with a huge gathe

Remembrance Day 2019 in Potton

Once again there was an amazing attendance at this morning's Service of Remembrance, In bright sunshine and with a dry, mild morning, the first part of the service led by Rdr Simon Gutteridge of St Mary's Church and Robert from the Salvation Army was on the Square, with prayers, readings and hymns. Then followed a parade to the War Memorial in the Cemetery on Sandy Road where the names of Potton's Lost Sons was read out by Alan Leggatt and a small cross was placed in the ground near the memorial, each presented by a member of one of the Town's Children's or Youth Organisations. Poppy Wreaths were laid on the War memorial by all the Town's organisations and representatives of other organisati

A Busy Weekend at St Mary's! Part 2

Last Sunday, the service at St Mary’s was our very popular Friends and Family activity service with Wendy and her team, with Morning Prayer for those who enjoy this short service, within a service. The theme this month was “Forgiveness and a Change of Heart”. As usual, it was a very lively service with a very good attendance and with plenty of projects to keep both children and adults busy. There were two further services last Sunday. At 3pm, we held our All Souls Service which is a service to remember our departed Family Members or Friends. Fifty people attended this peaceful service of prayer, music and the lighting of candles as we remembered our lost ones. The service was jointly present

A Busy Weekend at St Mary's! Part 1

The weekend got off to a really busy start on Saturday with our annual Fireworks and Bonfire evening, on the Church Field. We were lucky it happened at all as the weather had not behaved all day but the Firework Crew, two competent young ladies this year, did the tests they need to do checking wind direction and gusting but declared all was within the required limits so apart from some light rain, the evening could go ahead . Meanwhile a keen crowd were turning up for the event and tucked into the prepared food mountain of hot and cold snacks, soup and drinks or a delicious Burger or Hot Dog from the BBQ whilst awaiting the start of the display. Many took advantage of the hall to wait in, av
