Pentecost finally ends the Easter Period of the Church Calendar, next important period, is Advent!

Pentecost Sunday, was the final service at the end of the Easter period. This was celebrated in St Mary’s Church last Sunday, most likely also in every Christian Church across the whole country. Each church will probably have a slight variation of this day, but here in Potton, the Rector, The Revd Alex Wheatley had prepared a lovely service as usual, about this important day, which commemorates the day when the Holy Spirit officially descended upon believers, and He began dwelling in their hearts. Before the descent of the Holy Spirit, Jesus spoke about the future outpouring of the Holy Spirit to His disciples, yet this day did not come into full realization until the day of Pentecost. Following Pentecost, the period we now enter in the Church calendar is known as “Ordinary Time” when there are no further celebrations between Pentecost and the first Sunday of Advent!

The Choir also sang some beautiful music during the act of Communion, because the service was a Choral Holy Communion which the congregation were able to enjoy. Many people in the congregation wore articles of red clothing, a Pentecostal tradition, and it was a really nice sight to see all the different ideas and shades of red. Overall, it was well attended service for this important day in the Christian Calendar. Then, it was all over, and minutes later, Revd Alex said a hasty farewell for this week as he departed to go and celebrate his 34th Birthday at a family lunch at Potton’s Italian Restaurant. We all wished him a happy birthday in a traditional way, led by the choir of course!

Next Sunday, June 4th will bring us the very popular Friends and Family, all age activity service, enjoyed every month by the many children who come, and their Mums, Dads, Grandparents and other family members and friends! Why not come and join us and bring your children? It’s a very relaxed service with refreshments during the activity session, and a Morning Prayer service for older members of the congregation. This month’s theme is Pentecost and why it is the end of Easter for another year.

The final Christian Aid collection amounted to £334.71. We had initially overlooked that the NightLight collection of £88, had not been added to the earlier sum collected. We are very pleased with this final sum which will now be added to the world collection to help those in poorer countries. We may well hear where our collection will be used at some time in the future. Well done to everyone who contributed to this fine sum of money.
