St Mary's is Recruiting!

Last week was not my best in a while but feeling much better, I hope I can deliver a bit more news from your Parish Church, about what we’re up to and what is coming up on the calendar soon.

Sunday’s morning service of Holy Communion, for the 3rd Sunday of Ephiphany, was ably delivered by our Rector, the Rev Alex Wheatley. His sermon told us of Jesus and how he would deliver his teachings in the Temple. He would deliberately not follow the ways used by the Temple Elders but would get his messages across in a much more modern way, for those times, but this of course did not go down too well with the Elders! There may be more of this story to follow as we move next week to the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. As usual, the service will be led by the Rev Alex, why not come and join us, new church members are always made very welcome?

The Burn’s Night held last Saturday, was a sell out with many new people coming to join in our first social event of the year. We were unsuccessful in finding a Piper to pipe in the Haggis in the traditional way, but there’s always next year! More social events are planned as the year goes on so please watch this column for future news.

But immediately in early February, we have news of some popular services which we hope will draw new people in to listen to God’s words but delivered in a different style. Our popular Friends and Family Morning Service returns on February 6th, a service for all ages and with craft projects for the children. Also on February 6th, NightLight, our service for quiet contemplation, readings, music and prayer will return, in the evening. More news on both services next week.

Our organist and music group leader, Nick Wilson is scheduled to give his Thought for the Day, on BigglesFM, on Friday, January 28th. This is at 8.15am on Alan’s Breakfast Show and Nick assures us he will be there with all the latest news from St Mary’s. Tune in to 104.8Mhz on the dial.

We are recruiting, well not for paid jobs but we would like to recruit more bellringers and church choir members. Bellringing is a popular pastime and full training will be given to newcomers or anyone who has previously been a ringer, but not for a while perhaps. St Mary’s has 6 bells and they are rung most Sundays with practice night being Tuesday. Anyone who is interested, please contact the Bell Captain, Rosemary Kimber by calling 01767 261206. Anyone interested in joining the choir could simply come to the church at 7pm on a Thursday and have a try out. There is no audition and being able to read music helps, but is not essential.

Regular users of the church hall might like to join the hall management committee to help with it’s general running and upkeep. Please drop a note through the hall door addressed to the hall manager, Paul Taylor, if you are interested.
