REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 2022

THE WAR MEMORIAL, POTTON

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY IN POTTON. The forecast for last Sunday, Remembrance Sunday was good but on the actual day we did not wake up to a nice bright morning as promised by the forecasters, not really the weather for a momentous event. However, it stayed dry but was quite misty although not really cold. The crowd started to assemble in the Market Square for a 10.15am start and it rapidly increased in numbers until it looked like it was going to break last year’s attendance record. The guest of honour was a little late so we started without him because it was important to start the march to the War Memorial at the cemetery in time for the 2 minutes silence. The Rector, the Rev’d Alex Wheatley and Major Christine McCutcheon from the Salvation Army got the service underway with prayers, a reading and hymns. This led to the time to start the march to the War Memorial, this year commanded and led by our Fire Brigade Chief, and Town Cryer, Carlton Avison. The many people marching made very good time arriving at the cemetery, where the ceremony got underway with the reading of the names, the laying of the Wreaths, the Last Post and Reveille, finally the singing of the National Anthem. Tea and coffee was then available in the community centre back near the Market Square. It was a good morning and it is gratifying that so many people come along to Remember those who gave their lives in the two World Wars and other conflicts. We thank everyone who came along.

Social Events We only one event in the near future, the French dinner on Saturday, 26th November, 7.00pm for 7.30pm. There will be a 4 course meal with a mini quiz followed by coffee and petit fours. Tickets are £20. Please sign up on the sheet on the sides persons table in St Mary’s Church, or ring Rosemary on 01767 261206 to book. This promises to be another great food evening, not far behind our recent successful evening with the Medieval Banquet, so why not try another great menu produced by our events team and chefs?

Also to look forward to: The Christmas Light Switch on, December 3rd and we have also a stall on the Christmas Market on December 10th, both events on the Market Square.
