Remembrance Sunday, 2020

The service on Sunday for Remembrance Day was certainly a different experience to our normal mass gathering in the Market Square followed by a long procession to the War Memorial in the cemetery. This year with the current month’s lockdown in place, none of that was able to take place. It was replaced by a Zoom service for those who were able to join in, and which was conducted by Bishop Richard of Bedford. It was a very moving service with parishioners from all three churches in the Benefice taking part. Apart from the Gospel reading, there were two poems penned by front line soldiers in their day and some pre-recorded hymns from St Martins in the Fields choir. Bishop Richard gave a very interesting sermon about a Bedford man who was a Chindit undercover soldier in the Far East War. He was the only one from his group who made it back to India. In later years he formed friendship associations which helped mend the rifts with the Japanese people he had previously fought against. The church bells were rung just before 11am and could be heard all over town and these were followed up by the Last Post played over a Public Address system in the Market Square, this was loud enough to be heard at the War Memorial which was a very welcome sound on that bright sunny morning! The names of the Fallen from across the Benefice were read out on line by the appropriate Churchwardens, and the names of the Potton Fallen, were also read out at the Memorial. The Wreaths were then laid in a carefully distance spaced way. The Town Council had further allocated times for individuals or groups to lay their tributes during the afternoon. Overall, Potton residents did the town proud with the ways they supported the day and hopefully next year, we can turn out in our hundreds once more.
