November 6th is the night this Year, for St Mary's Bonfire and Firework Party!

The Rev Alex Wheatley conducted the Morning Service of Holy Communion in St Mary’s Church last Sunday. In his sermon, the Rev Alex talked about St Luke and the chapters of the Bible that he was responsible for. Naturally the book of St Luke immediately springs to mind but he also wrote the Acts of the Apostles and The Rev Alex recommended this book as very informative and said much more than the book of St Luke, so advised it as a book we should all read and learn from.

In the afternoon, a special Civic Service was held at St Mary’s Church. The Rev Alex Wheatley welcomed into our church, Mr John Hobbs, Chairman of Potton Town Council, Major Simon Sadler, standing in for the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, the Chairman of Central Bedfordshire Council, Leaders of District and local Town councils from other areas, and members of our community, to attend Potton’s Annual Civic Service, held to celebrate the work done by our Town and District Councillors, and council workers who provide us with facilities such as the library, the emergency services, our local medical services, schools and much more support in many ways. The choir from the Potton Federation Schools entertained us with a delightful programme of singing and St Mary's Choir led the hymn singing. The service was well attended and after the final Blessing from the Rev Alex, a reception was held in the church hall with delicious homemade cakes, tea or wine to round the afternoon off. Thank you to the organisers.

As usual, St Mary’s will be hosting the Town’s annual firework and bonfire evening, this year on November 6th, weather permitting. The doors open at 6pm, the bonfire will be lit at 6.45pm and finally the firework display starts at 7.15pm. Hot and cold food and drinks and BBQ food will be available at reasonable prices so why not come along for another great evening. More details on local posters round the Market Square or on our Facebook page. (see poster above)

Our groups, First Steps and Craft and Chatter, meet regularly in the church hall and on a Friday. For full details check out our website or Facebook pages or pick up a copy of our Sunday Link weekly newsletter. The church choir is now meeting again each Thursday evening at 7pm, to rehearse for an hour. The Christmas Nine Lessens and Carols service is now being rehearsed and will be performed on December 19th. Any budding choristers who would like to join, should call in on a Thursday evening and sing with us to see if you would like to join us. All adult voices needed, and children’s voices too. We operate full Safeguarding for children and vulnerable adults.

Finally, on October 29th, (not the 22nd as previously advertised), don’t forget to listen to the Biggles FM Breakfast Show on Friday morning, at 8.15am as Nick Wilson, St Mary’s Church Organist, will once more be the speaker giving his fortnightly Thought for the Day.
