Mourning for HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

On a chilly but beautiful sunny morning last Sunday, St Mary’s congregation met for a Holy Communion service to celebrate the 2nd week of Easter. The service was led by the Rev Alex Wheatley who cleverly used two short sermons this week; the continuing Easter story and a tribute to the late HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Whilst Rev Alex gave Communion during the Service, Abide with Me sung by the Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge was played on our sound system, as singing in church is still not allowed.

On Saturday, St Mary’s Bell Captain, Rosemary Kimber, rang 99 Tolls in honour of Prince Philip, one for every year of his life, with every other toll half muffled signifying mourning. It was a moving tribute from our Parish in honour of the life of the husband of our beloved Queen.

The service next Sunday morning will be Holy Communion for the third week of Easter again led by the Rev Alex Wheatley. With the easing of some of the lockdown regulations, we are hoping to gradually get back to a more normal service routine. Zoom has served us well over the last few months, but communion with others in church has been sorely missed so it is good to meet up with others, albeit socially distanced and masked, once more on a Sunday morning!

Next Sunday 18th April, Easter 3. 9am. All Saints Church, Sutton, Holy Communion with the Rdr David Kilpatrick. 10.30am, St Mary’s Church, Potton, Holy Communion with the Revd Alex Wheatley. 3pm St John the Baptist Church, Cockayne Hatley (Lay Led, to be confirmed).
