Lent is almost upon us, plenty of information here about our Lent Programme

Weather forecasters keep hinting that there will be more snow to come, maybe quite a lot of it! Well it certainly didn’t look like that in Potton this morning, it was a really nice Spring morning, a little mild even, and it certainly attracted quite a good congregation into St Mary’s to hear the Treasure Box Holy Communion, presented by the Rector, the Rev Alex Wheatley. During his sermon, the Rev Alex spoke of the writings of Matthew is his Gospel, a gospel now believed to have been written at least 90 years after the events it tells us about, and it is very unlikely to have been written by Matthew as he would have been extremely old. It was probably written after the hand me down stories, told over the decades, were eventually written down for following generations to read, and these stories eventually ended up as St Matthew’s Gospel. Matthew was the Prophet who told most of the early life of Jesus and up to his death on the Cross. Rev Alex had prepared some colouring papers for our children to fill in while he spoke but there was only one little girl in church today and she filled her sheet in, very neatly and very accurately This young lady, aged I think 6 or 7 at the most, had the congregation really amused by her very good explanations of her very neat drawings, a very good bit of sensible education for us all! Well done.

The service at 10.30am next Sunday will be the last of the month and is Choral Holy Communion, a service with more music led by the church choir. All are welcome.

There is also an Ash Wednesday service in St Mary’s at 7.30pm, on Wednesday February 22nd, “The traditional service that begins this season of repentance”.

Social Events. Coming soon will be an Irish Night, to be held on March 18th in the church hall. Full details are now released and bookings can now be made, but the evening will include of course, a traditional Irish Stew and a fun Irish Quiz. The evening starts at 7pm for 7.30pm when the quiz will start. Teams of 4 to 6 are needed so why not book a table with your friends? Tickets cost £15 pp, pay on the door on arrival. To be sure to get your tickets, call Rosemary on 07753 638278 or use the sign up sheet in St Mary’s. Cost will include a two course Irish meal and there will be a Bar available. This is another fun night organised by your Parish Church to raise money for building maintenance, especially repairs to the tower. We look forward to seeing you all there!

The next Parish Lunch will be held on Friday February 24th at 12.45pm in the church hall as usual. Tickets for the lunch are sold on the door on a first come first served basis, for £9, this includes a 2 course dinner and tea/coffee. Last month we presented the St John’s Hospice at Moggerhanger, with the proceeds of last year’s lunches amounting to £5500. Over the many years we have been raising money for the hospice, they have told us that the Potton Parish Lunch makes us their highest donor, quite an achievement from the small start that we made in those early days over 20 years ago! There is also a raffle held and we ask people to bring in a raffle prize donation if they are able to. Food items will only be accepted if they are in date, so check the labels please!

The organising team would like to talk to any volunteers to help with this monthly event. Please talk to one of our ladies if you would like to be involved

Thought for the Day on BigglesFM. The next “Thought for the Day” given by our organist, Nick Wilson, will be on February 24th at 8.15am on BigglesFM when the presenter, Alan Waring will once more speak to Nick about what is happening in St Mary’s Church and Nick will be giving details of future events and services in the near future. The next time Nick will be talking to Alan is on March 10th . Find them on 104.8Mhz on the FM dial on your radio.
