It's good News Week
We are delighted that we are now in a position to confirm that the Reverend Alex Wheatley is to be our new Rector. Alex is currently Assistant Curate in the Benefice of Christ Church Skipton with St. Mary’s Carleton in Craven, in the Diocese of Leeds. He was ordained Deacon in 2017 and then as a Priest in 2018. Previously Alex worked as a Student Outreach Worker for the Universities Chaplaincy in Leeds followed by some administrative roles. During this time he was an active member of St. Michael and All Angels’ Church in Headingly Leeds. He trained for ministry at Westcott House for three years. He believes in the power church has to change lives and to love communities into life, as it is continually empowered by God and called to participate in his saving work.
He is married to Emily, whom he met through St. Michael’s. She was born and raised in Bedfordshire and looks forward to being in the area once again. Alex and Emily are delighted to be moving and Alex is both honoured and very excited to become the new Rector of Potton with Sutton and Cockayne Hatley. A date for Alex’s Institution Service will be announced in the near future but it is thought this will now be in the New Year.
Our Morning Service last Sunday was Holy Communion given by the Rev Gillian Orpin who once more gave one of her interesting sermons, this time on some of the parables. In the evening, we held our annual Little Stars service, a service of remembrance for all those who have lost a child during pregnancy or in their early months or years. This was a well attended service within the limits allowed at this time, allowing parents to think about a little one lost at some stage of their early life, a really gentle service which gave a chance to talk to others who also lost little loved ones. The service was led by Rdr Simon Gutteridge.
The service next Sunday will be a Lay Preacher led Harvest Festival Service of the Word. All are welcome. The final Harvest Festival within the Benefice will be next Sunday, 18th October at St John's Cockayne Hatley, starting at 3pm.
St Mary’s is open for private prayer on Monday, Thursday and Sunday of each week. Please follow the advice given in church for visitors regarding Covid-19 restrictions. Possible bookings for weddings, baptisms and funerals may be made by calling the church office on 01767 261202 or email to: email@example.com. The Church Hall will soon be available for bookings once more but if you have a future date in mind, please ring 01767 260430 to enquire availability.
