Easter is almost here!

The Palm Sunday Walk at St John's Church, Cockayne Hatley

Palm Sunday came with a bright, breezy morning with just a little rain in the air, but not enough to prevent the Palm Sunday walk from along the farm track which leads to the St John the Baptist Church at Cockayne Hatley. The Church doesn’t look it’s best at the moment as it is covered in scaffolding and corrugated iron during a major job on the ancient stonework, but that did not spoil the special service which was to take place inside on that morning. In the absence of the Revd Alex Wheatley, our Rector, and still unwell, the service was taken by a retired Priest, the Revd Canon Andrew Holford, formerly the Vicar of St Mary’s Church in Baldock, but now living in Sandy. Canon Andrew was assisted by Rdr Simon Gutteridge. The service started with a walk of about 300 metres into the church, made up of members of St John’s, St. Mary’s of Potton and All Saint’s Church from Sutton, waving Palm Leaves and singing the traditional hymn, “All Glory, Laud and Honour” as they arrived at the church. The service of Holy Communion, led by Canon Andrew, also included at the end, the words always used for the Palm Sunday service, read in turn by four members of the congregation. It was a lovely service and was enjoyed by all present.

The Service next Sunday will be the traditional Easter Day Communion celebration, hopefully to be led by the Revd Alex, so we wish him a complete recovery very soon.

Maundy Thursday (Apr 6) Service in St Mary’s Church will start at 7.30pm with an acceleration of the Holy Week story, recalling the Last Supper, with a meal shared together. This is followed by the Watch, as we enter into the Silence and the Tension of the Garden of Gethsemane.

Good Friday (Apr 7) Starting at 10am, there will be a Walk of Witness from St Mary’s members with the Salvation Army to their Citadel and tells the story of Christ’s walk from his trial, to his execution. This walk is open to all who may like to join in with this story of the “Real Happening” of this sad and confusing story.
