Sutton, All Saints Church beautifully decorated for Christmas
This will be our last column entry for this year in the Biggleswade Chronicle and we will start again on the week beginning January 11th 2021. Information normally found in our column will continue to be found here, on our website and Facebook pages up to Christmas and this will include all service information and any changes which we may have to make.
The morning service of Holy Communion last Sunday was back in St Mary’s for the first time since the recent lockdown and the Rev Gillian Orpin once again led us in a lovely service. About 30 people made it there through the morning rain but the church felt cold due to the fact it had been un-used for a few weeks. Our 2 year old overhead electric heating was working well but it did not take away the damp feeling we all noticed. Next Sunday’s morning service will again be Holy Communion with the Rev Ray Porter from Gamlingay.
Last Sunday afternoon saw a new feature for this season, a Zoom on line Christingle service. There was a nice little gathering with children in family groups or working on their own and some older people as well, a good mix. The service led by Rdr Simon and CW Dawn, took every one through a treasure hunt around their homes to find the items needed to make a Christingle. There were some very good ones made and of course a few amusing ones, but they all helped to tell the Christingle story. These services are to raise funds for the Children’s Society so our service ended with a video on how to make a contribution which is normally done by a collection during the service.
Last Saturday St Mary’s had a fund raising stall on Potton’s Quarterly Market. The wet morning did not deter people from attending but it was sensibly socially spaced as well as being busy. St Mary’s Church would like to thank the many people who supported us, helping us raise £370 towards the church bell tower repair fund. We hope the repairs to the damaged stonework can commence in 2021. Many people purchased our Christmas cards and we still have some available at £4 for 10 unique cards of winter scenes with 5 cards displaying a painting of the church by local artist Ian Russell and the other 5, a photograph of St Mary’s in a beautiful snowy setting. These can be purchased by contacting David Tall on 01767 261713.
