Benefice Services and some new changes

Another warm and sticky day as I write my Sunday report. Even with my north facing window open and a fan running it’s not too pleasant. But they tell us it will cool down and we may get some rain so I hope the baked and cracked earth is not to hard to let the rain do it’s job. The morning service on Sunday was as usual led by the Rector, the Rev Alex Wheatley who posed a question about his sermon title which I think, surprised a lot of people as the subject was so basic, so probably not too many people knew what the answer was! Simply, Rev Alex’s question was, “who introduced Christianity into Britain?” Many would say the Romans, which was correct for them but they were conquerors, not missionaries so did not really force the population into becoming Christians! The real answer was St Aidan who came over from Ireland and it was he who started to spread the word and in doing so gained many followers. Rev Alex brought some fascinating detail about St Aidan in his talk, a very interesting subject. Next Sunday, August 21st, the Rector will once more lead the morning service of Holy Communion.

Service News and Changes Starting on August 16th, is our new Midweek Communion Service at 12noon in the Church Hall. Refreshments will be available. Another change in our schedules is the new Morning Prayer service in St Mary’s Church starting at 9am, with the exception of the second Sunday of the month. The Wednesday weekly 5pm service has now been discontinued.

Please note that the morning service on August 28th will be at 11am in the “Party on Potton” marquee and will be an Ecumenical Songs of Praise where will be joined by church members from other Potton churches. There will be no morning service at St Mary’s that day.

Parish Lunch for August 26th.

The next Parish lunch to support St John's Hospice at Moggerhanger will be held in St Mary's church hall on Friday 26th August at 12.45pm and on the last Friday of the month after this. The cost is £8 for a tasty two course meal and payment is taken at the door. Please support this enjoyable event for a very worthwhile cause. Unfortunately, due to rising costs, the price of the lunch will be increased to £9 with effect from the lunch in September. We still need more people to prepare a main course or dessert for the lunch, costs can be re-imbursed. If you can help please contact Jane on 01767 260193 or Judi on 01767 260710. The lunch for July raised £424 which puts us well on course for another bumper donation to St John’s Hospice in the new year.
