The Palm Sunday Service at St Mary's Church

The morning service last Sunday was Holy Communion for Palm Sunday with the service commencing with a traditional procession around the outside of the church by the congregation, led by the Choir singing the well known hymn for Palm Sunday, All Glory, Laud and Honour. Before the Rev Gill Smith gave her sermon, the choir sang the opening chorus from the sacred cantata by JH Maunder, “Olivet to Calvary” the story in music of Jesus’ journey into Jerusalem. The Rev Gill’s sermon illustrated more of the journey from the olive groves, with the joyful arrival of Jesus in the city but leading to his death on the cross just a few days later. All members of the congregation were given a palm cross during the service, all made in an African community.
