This week in our Church

Over the last few weeks, we have been reporting the progress of our organist, Judith Barker who became seriously ill following a fall. Sadly, we received the news on Tuesday morning, that Judith had passed away in the early hours, she lost her battle but was very peaceful at the end. We will miss Judith, she was a very talented organist and musician and a great loss to our church.

Last Sunday was an exceptionally busy day in St Mary’s. The morning service of Holy Communion for the Harvest Festival, saw many gifts of food stuff placed on the Altar step in readiness to be passed on in the traditional way, to help the needy of the parish. The service as usual was led by the Rector, the Rev Gill Smith and this week she was assisted by trainee Lay Leader of Worship (LLW) Amy Taylor, who was taking part of the service as part of her training. A little nervous maybe, but Amy did very well and gave a very amusing and interesting sermon.

In the afternoon, St Mary’s was host to Potton’s Annual Civic Service. The service was well attended and many Councillors from local councils and district councils and the Queens representative in Bedfordshire, the Lord Lieutenant, escorted by her Honourary Cadet were present. Thanks were given to all those who supply services to our community and those who help in any other way to keep the community spirit going. After the service, refreshments were served in the hall by our Events Team members.

Finally, at 6.30pm, we held a very moving Little Stars Baby Remembrance Service. Many couples who had lost a child early in life came and took part in the service which was planned by the Rev Gill, Paula and Fiona. It was a really nice atmosphere during which time candles were lit and stars were hung, on a specially made tree, bearing names and prayers for the little lost ones, and gentle music was played. The service was well attended and and people came from further afield than Potton which was very pleasing for the organisers. Refreshments were served allowing casual talking between people, exchanging experiences of their own losses.

Our First Steps toddler and baby group meet today as usual in the church hall at 9.30am. Details about the Group can be obtained from Group Organiser, Sandy, on 01767 260430. Our popular Craft and Chatter group will meet this evening, as usual at 7.30pm, in the church hall. Details from 01767 260792. Any craft and as much chatter as you want for £2.50 which includes refreshments! Morning Prayer services will be held next week, at Cockayne Hatley Church on Monday, Sutton Church on Thursday, and on Tuesday and Friday at St Mary’s, all services at 9am. All are welcome.

We are only days away now from the Benefice “Half Way There” Mission led by Bishop Richard of Bedford. There are a variety of events organised, look out for posters around the town. The events start on October 24. The full details will be found on our Facebook page and our website, along with other news. Next Friday, The Rector the Rev Gill Smith, will be on BigglesFM at 8.15am with her Thought for the Day and this time she will be accompanied by Bishop Richard. Find her on 104.8 on the dial. Also next Friday, at 12.45pm, it is the monthly Parish Lunch in aid of St John’s Hospice at Moggerhanger. Please note, there are now places available at the lunches so if you haven’t been before, why not try one of our delicious home made meals with a choice of 5 or 6 dishes plus a variety of desserts to follow. Two courses plus a hot drink, only £7.
