Sunday afternoon in Cambridge

After the service last Sunday, a coachload of members from across the Benefice, set off for Magdalene College in Cambridge for a very nice Roast Advent Lunch prepared by the staff and served in the Masters Dining Room. This was later followed by a viewing of the film “The Theory of Everything” the life story of the late Prof. Stephen Hawking. He was of course in his early days, a student at Cambridge and was well known around Magdalene College in later years . The film was shown in the nearby Cripps Centre. It was a very enjoyable afternoon, thanks to Bob Smith for organising it.

Janet has been a leading light in our Lay Ministry Team, becoming a Lay Leader of Worship (LLW) and taking many smaller services or assisting the Rector during the morning service. Janet was also the LLW who devised and organised the All Souls Service over the last few years, making it a great success for many people in the Town, giving them a chance to remember their lost family and friends. Last Saturday evening, we were treated to a Murder Mystery in the recently renamed church hall, For the evening it was the Grande Grosse Hotel on the Costa Cheapo but before everyone arrived, a horrible murder had taken place, the murder of the hotel Proprietor. Fortunately, the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot was staying there at the time and quickly engaged the rest of the evening’s guests in solving this horrendous crime. The play, a short mystery comedy, was written by Potton Playhouse secretary Marcia Jackson and was a joint production between Playhouse and St Mary’s Events Team. It was a hilarious evening for both actors and audience and even the actors did not know “whodunit”

Potton Remembers, in their Hundreds

Sunday, November 11, 2018, saw Potton celebrate the Centenary of the end of World War One. Perhaps celebrate is not the right word here but it was a celebration because this ugly war that cost so many young lives ended this day in 1918, young lives on both sides of the conflict. But it was a big day for Remembrance and the people of Potton once more turned out in their hundreds to fill the Market Square for the start of the Town's event packed day, for a short service before Proceeding to the War Memorial at the Sandy Road Cemetery. The service, led by the Rev Gill Smith from St Mary's, Tony Burt from Potton Baptist Church and Robert Dunham from Potton Salvation Army, got underway with praye

Concert to Commemorate the End of World War One

On the afternoon of Remembrance Day, a wonderful free concert was given to the people of Potton in St Mary's Church, presented by Douglas Coombes MBE with the Amici Singers, The Ensemble of Friends, Thomas Fountain, Trumpet and Trevor Hughes on the Keyboard. The programme was a mixture of Music by the two Choirs, hymns sung by the Choirs and Congregation and Poems read by choir members and the Rev Gill Smith of St Mary's Church. But the highlight of the concert was a suite written by Douglas Coombes entitled Anthem for Doomed Youth. This was a very moving suite and it incorporated Poems set to Music from well known Poets of that time including the title Poem of the suite, Anthem for Doomed

St Mary's Fireworks and Bonfire Evening

Saturday November 3rd was the night chosen for this year’s Bonfire and Firework evening organised by St Mary’s Church. The weather was perfect, quite mild and we thought there would be a good turnout for the event, and we weren’t disappointed. The huge bonfire was lit at about 6.30pm as the crowds were arriving but the Firework display commenced at 7.15pm, by that time everyone who was coming was in the field, waiting in anticipation. As the first fireworks took off, cheers and cries of joy came from the watching crowd. It was a very good display this year but it was all over after about 20 minutes but thoroughly enjoyed by all those who were present. All evening hot and cold refreshment wer

Events from Last Week at St Mary's

St Mary's said a fond farewell to our late Organist Judith Barker last Tuesday. The church was packed to say goodbye to this talented musician who had led our church music with her late husband David, who died a year ago, for about the last ten years. Judith will be sorely missed by us all. After all the activity of the previous week with our successful Mission with Bishop Richard. St Mary’s had another busy day last Sunday starting with our popular Friends and Family activity service. This service is now attracting more interest and this week the attendance level was probably our highest so far. The theme for some activities was next Sunday’s Day of Remembrance and the end of World War One.
