MU sounds alarm over sexualisation of children
Eighty per cent of UK parents think that television, computer games, films and the
internet are ‘sexualising’ our children, a survey for the Mothers’ Union (MU) has
found. The ComRes research for the MU report Bye Buy Children showed that eight in
ten parents feel sexual and violent material is too easily available for children
and has made them more sexually aware at a younger age. The report explores the impact
of £350 million spent every year by marketers to turn children into consumers. One
of the most worrying trends is ‘peer-to-peer marketing’, the MU says. Here children
are recruited to forward email addresses of friends to advertisers and promote products
to other children. The MU has issued the report in the wake of controversy over products
such as padded bras and pole-dancing kits aimed at young girls. It believes that
the intensive marketing pressure is ‘diminishing’ children’s ‘sense of belonging
and meaning’.
